On March 23, the second annual Challenge the Greenway event will take place in Westport. It was a rocky week for the West on Track campaigners who seemed to have taken a severe blow on Tuesday when the Minister for Transport, Tourism, and Sport Leo Varadkar was quoted in The Irish Times as saying that the line would not be extended from Athenry to Tuam.

“The west needs to wake up before their thunder is stolen,” says John Mulligan, who is one of a number of people who are interested in creating a national network of cycling and walking trails.

The Great Western Greenway, County Mayo, has been awarded the Irish Environment Award of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM ). The award was presented to Mayo County Council by John Casey, chairperson of the Republic of Ireland branch of the CIWEM, at a reception in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin, on Friday November 23.

A new tourism initiative targeting adventure travel tourists was launched by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny this week with the aim of bringing a slice of the $89billion global adventure market to Mayo. Greenway Adventures is a collection of 11 Mayo-based adventure tourism providers that, together, form the county’s first adventure trail.

The second Great Western Greenway 10k run/walk, co-organised by Mayo Sports Partnership, Westport Leisure Park and Westport Town Council, took place on Saturday May 26 last with more than 300 participants lining up for a 2pm start on the Newport side of the Greenway. According to Mayo Sports Partnership, the event which took place in fantastic weather conditions mainly attracted first time runners of this distance and was an off road trail run/walk.
